News Article: Butterfield Acquires Battle Creek Airiers: Detroit - The 843-car
Auto Drive-In and the 846-car
West Point at Battle Creek have been taken over by
Butterfield Theatres, largest circuit operator in Michigan. They have been operated for years by the
Midwest Theatre Enterprises and Theatre Operating Co., headed by Al Boudouris, also head of Theatre Equipment Co. of Toledo.
Butterfield has remained predominantly an indoor theatre operator. The late Col. W. S. Butterfield made his home in Battle Creek
although the circuit has been based for 40 years or more in Detroit, where it operates no theatres. The Butterfield has four of the five
theatres at Battle Creek-the Bijou, Michigan, Regent, and Strand. (Boxoffice Magazine 9/23/63)
Status: Was replaced by subdivision. (Rob 10-5-03)
Update: I can remember seeing this abandoned DI back in about 1994 or 1995. It was still intact then but very heavily overgrown.
Anyone know when it was closed? (Waterwinterwonderland.com/Eric Schulz 6/7/05)
Update: Regarding an earlier comment, 1984 was the last full season the West Point was open. However it may have been open
for just a few short weeks early in the spring of 1985 before it closed for good as i recall. I know that by the summer of '85 it was
closed. (Waterwinterwonderland.com/TB 11/27/07)
