History & Comments

News Article: Sault's First Outdoor Theater Opens Sunday -- The Sault area's newest entertainment facility, the Starlite Drive-In Theater, will be open for the first time Sunday evening. The Soo Amusement Co., operator of the $100,000 drive-in, has booked "Fair Wind to Java" and "Pride of St.Louis" for the opening bill, Sunday and Monday. Each picture will be shown only once, starting at dusk, and Joseph DePaul of Soo Amusement expects that the showing will be completed about midnight. There will be a short intermission between the first and second features. The drive-in, called the largest of its type in the Upper Pennisula is located at Pine Grove, at the corner of US-2 and the old Brimley Road. It has a capacity of 470 cars. The movies are projected from the front of the commissary building, which also contains rest rooms and a large concession stand where coffee, popcorn, hot dogs, candy, cold soft drinks, ice cream and milk will be offered for sale. A special feature of the concession is bottle warmers which will be offered to mothers with babies. A number of pieces of playground equipment have been installed for use of the children at the Starlite. The shows will be started at dusk. (Sault Ste.Marie Evening News 7/25/53)

News Article: Drive-In Theater Opening Postponed; No Film Lenses - Opening of the Starlite Drive-in Theater at Pine Grove Corners, originally scheduled for Sunday night, has been postponed. Imperfections in equipment were detected at the last minute, the Soo Amusement Co. announced. The proper lenses for the projection equipment have not yet arrived, the company announcement said. The company, in line with its policy of showing only the best availiable, did not want to open under those conditions, the announcement continued. The opening date will be determined within a day or two. (Sault Ste.Marie Evening News 7/27/53)

Update: Screen is down, ticket booth, snack bar, and marquee remain. (Darryl Burgess/Outdoor Moovies 10/8/99)

Update: The old drive-in has been completely obliterated by what looks to be a truss company. (Waterwinterwondrland.com 10/1/03)

Update: I remember being a "two-striper" Airman at nearby Kincheloe Air Force Base and going to this drive-in back in 1972 as a 20-year old. We would pack a car load of Air Force "cops" with girlfriends into our 383 Roadrunners or 350 Nova SSs and take our own "refreshments" along. One night, we watched the movie "M*A*S*H" until the fog rolled in off Lake Superior and you couldnt even see the screen from the front row! Thanks for the memories. Update: As a former resident of the Soo I went to this drive-in many times in my younger years. As a young person a lot of us would sneak into the drive-in in the trunks of cars or walk in and meet our friends inside. You had to walk through the swamp out back though. Last time I saw the area, it was basically an empty field with speaker stands sticking up through the long grass. I think there is a business there now. (Bob Newcomb 8/21/05)
