History & Comments

Update: All traces of the Silver Drive-In are long gone. The site is now occupied by an apartment complex. (Michigandriveins.com 4/16/05)

Update: This image of the Silver Drive-in was taken about 1977. It was very near the start of September 1978 when I went there on my first date to see "Smokey and the Bandit" with Rollercoaster"! Those two features played at the Silver from Wednesday Aug 30th, through Tuesday September 5th. At that time, adults were $3.00 and the boxoffice opened every night at 7:30pm. Shows started at dusk. Interesting note, both of those movies opened in 1977 demonstrating that the Silver and probably a lot of drive-ins at that time were not getting first run features on the day of their release. It was really crowded that night. First we had to wait to get in as there was a huge line of cars lined up waiting to pay at the boxoffice. When I finally had a chance to pay, the woman who took my money was Mrs Behrens who's daughter also went to Linden. Little did I know I'd be working with her and her daughter two years later. Anyway, I was worried if I was going to get a good spot or not. Once parked and facing the screen, we were pretty close and to the left of the concession area. "Smokey and the Bandit" was really cool to watch in my mom's 1977 yellow Firebird. There was the Bandit running around in a black 1977 Trans Am and even though the car I was driving was yellow, the body and the inside of the car looked the same to me! I remember it was just really cool watching that car running around that looked very much like the car I was watching the movie in! It felt like it could have been me on that screen! There was this one scene where Sheriff Buford T. Justice was in a hurry, but behind a bunch of stopped cars when he madly said something to the effect of "Are we in line for a Drive-in movie?!" I just thought that was funny and ironic at the same time. The 2nd feature I had already seen. It seemed really old to me since I saw Rollercoaster about June 1977 when it first came out. I was originally excited about seeing Rollercoaster because it was one of the few titles to be presented with Sensurround. Of course the drive-in was not set up for Sensurround, so I just used my imagination! (Barney Kahn 3/1/09)

Update: My father, Ernie Gerebics worked for Al at the drive in for several years. We lived directly across the street from the drive-in. My dad was responsible for changing the marqee. I remember many times, my sister, brother and I would go help our dad clean up after the fireworks. We had so much fun. Sometimes we would get in free. We moved away, but continued to go to the drive-in for many years. They had an awesome little playground right under the screen where we would all play while waiting for the movie to start. We liked to take our blankets up on the roof of the car and watch the movie there, after mom sprayed us with Off. I remember well, long lines at the bathroom during intermisson, the smell of the popcorn, and those great big pickles (they were my favorite). We sure were sad to see the Silver Lake Drive-In close. Then, the Rowena Theater downtown Fenton were another story...... (oldclergygramma 6/25/11)
