Update: Managed by Edward Carrow, and Arthur and Roger Robinson, who also owned the
Ypsi-Ann and Willow drive-ins, the Scio
boasted a 65-foot screen.
General Cinemas Corp., in a deal that also included the Ypsi-Ann and the Willow, took over the operation
of the Scio in July 1967. The Scio switched to adults-only films in 1974 under the new owners, VIP Theatres, and immediately became
a source of controversy. Area residents complained that the adult films were visible from both Jackson Road and the nearby I-94
expressway. Although the Michigan state police temporarily shut down the theater in 1975, the Scio continued to operate, even
opening an adult bookstore two years before it closed in 1985. A projection booth and concessions building were razed in early 1991.

Update: Gone, site is vacant. (Michigandriveins.com 7/98)
Update: The Scio Drive-In site remains overgrown and vacant. The snack bar foundation, and screen foundations remain.
Closed prior to 1990. (1/19/03)
Update: Those "light poles" that are listed as illuminating the driveway were actually shining east so passersby could not see the X rated fare on the screen!
Also, that ariel view does not seem right. The screen back at the Scio faced due west, and the ramps were curved but ran north and south. I think this is
the wrong photo. Miss their wet t shirt night. (Waterwinterwonderland.com 5/23/04)
Update: The Scio site remains vacant. (Michigandriveins.com 3/5/06)
Update: Back in the mid 70's I sold tickets at the Ypsi-Ann DI AND at the Scio Church DI - both owned by Butterfield. I had to
wear a black skirt, white shirt and black tie. Quite chic. :) (Nancy Page 3/23/06)
Update: The picture is correct. If you look, Don''s bodyshop is sitting right near where the ticket booth was. BE CAREFUL if you try to drive in
(pun fully intended) there for a look around. The treadles installed by VIP in the exit road are STILL THERE!!
I would love to go through there with a metal detector some time.....wonder what ever happened to the old fire engine that sat below the
screen for years? (Waterwinterwonderland.com 6/7/08)
