| Name: MEL'S DRIVE-IN
Address/Map: 140 S. Van Ness Ave. San Francisco, CA Opened: 1947 - Capacity: 110 cars Websites/Photos: Melsdrive-in.com - Universal Studios AG Site - Unofficial AG Homepage - Kip Pullmans AG Site Status: Perhaps the most famous drive-in of them all. The original Mel's Drive-In, was the first in a large chain of drive-in's created by Mel Weiss in California. Sadly, the chain did not survive and this location closed in the early 70's. It was briefly revived in 1972 for the filming of American Graffiti, and then promptly demolished after filming was completed. The Mel's Drive-In chain was revived by Weiss' son in the mid-80's and now has seven locations. However, none of the restaurants in the current chain offer curb service. There is now an Apartment Building on the site of Mel's. |

Address/Map: 1306 N. Main St. Salinas, CA 93906 Opened: n/a Closed: 2004 Status: Closed A long-time southern California cruisin' hot-spot, Roy's was forced to close in September 2004 after a professional litigant sued over Roy's supposed lack of handicapper accessibility. The paraplegic that filed the suit decided if he couldn't access the restroom at Roys, no one else should either. Read about it HERE and HERE and HERE. The huge neon marquee was offered for sale on eBay. More photos at svsrod.com. |
