MUSTANG - CAPRI DRIVE- IN 40TH ANNIVERSARY

9-19-04: The Mustang - Capri 40th Anniversary Event is history! Things got rolling at 9am Saturday morning with a car show and bbq at Cole-Story Ford. The awesome new 2005 Mustang GT was on display and attracted much attention. The car show ended with a surprise, the arrival all the way from Chicago of Dennis McGee and family in their beautiful '68 "Bullitt" Mustang, which made the event truly complete. Dennis' Bullitt is an outstanding recreation of McQueens Stang, right down to the Highand Green paint and American Torq-Thrust wheels. At 6pm The Mustangs left the dealership on a police-ecorted cruise through Coldwater to the Capri Drive-In. It must have been quite a site seeing all those Mustangs rolling through town together. The pack of 60-some ponies was appropriately led by Dennis in his '68 Bullitt with three 2001 Bullitts in tow behind him. Bringing up the rear was the new 2005 Mustang. Before the show began, Dennis graciously let us borrow his Bullitt for a quick photo-op under the Capri's lit-up marquee. The Mustangs gathered together in reserved parking in front of screen one at the Capri, in anticipation of "Bullitt". Steve McQueen and his tough Mustang came to life at dusk and certainly didn't disappoint the crowd. Watching the famous chase scene from the front row was bigger than life on the huge 120' wide screen. Watching the Dvd just won't be the same anymore! A perfectly clear star-filled Michigan sky, Bullitt on the big Capri screen, an enthusiastic crowd and lots of Mustangs made this one memorable night, one I won't forget anytime soon! If you were there let us (and the Capri) know what you thought! If you missed it, you'll have to just make do with these photos, because it was an event that will not likely ever happen again!....Ron - MichiganDriveIns.com

UPDATE 9-8-04: Press Release for 40th Anniversary Mustang Car Show For Immediate Release - Wednesday, September 8, 2004 - CAPRI DRIVE-IN TO FEATURE STEVE MCQUEEN CLASSIC TO CELEBRATE MUSTANG'S 40TH ANNIVERSARY - Coldwater, MI - A treasured piece of cinematic history will return to the big screen at the Capri Drive-In on Saturday, September 18th. The 1968 Steve McQueen masterpiece, "Bullitt" will be shown as part of a special triple bill to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Ford Mustang. The importance of the film and the influence of it on countless other features since cannot be underestimated. The car chase scene alone, which takes place in an around San Francisco between a classic Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger, has been debated, studied and analyzed by many in the film industry and fans alike. It is considered to be the "prototype" for modern action films. The portrayal of the tough, hard-boiled cop, as played by Steve McQueen has clearly influenced films like "Dirty Harry," "Basic Instinct," and "Heat" among many others. "I was thrilled when my film booker told me there were still prints available." says Tom Magocs, who owns and operates the theatre with his wife Susan. "We were getting a lot of feedback during the planning stages of the event that showing Bullitt would be a great way to bring in a good crowd." added Susan. The reason for this is that Mustang owners have a particular love for the film, so much so that Ford Motor Co. has used the film in it's promotional efforts, culminating with the release of the 2001 "Bullitt" Special Edition Mustang, which was an updated version of the car driven by McQueen in the movie. It was of course considered an instant collector's item. As for the original vehicles used in the film, one was destroyed immediately after filming and the other sits in the barn of a private owner who wishes to remain anonymous. It has been reported that the car is in the same condition as it was in 1968, right down to the mounting brackets that were added to the car to hold the 35mm cameras. The owner refuses to part with it, even turning down a handsome offer by Steve McQueen himself! The Capri Drive-In, also celebrating its 40th year, will host this event in conjunction with Cole Story Ford in Coldwater. The dealership lot will open at 9:00 AM and will have the new 2005 Mustang on display. During the afternoon, the Coldwater Apple Festival will be held downtown. There will then be a free barbecue reception at the dealership at 5:00, followed by a cruise to the Capri at 6:00 PM. All Mustang show participants that arrive at the theatre before 7:30 will get in for $5.00, which $2.00 off the normal adult price. "Bullitt" will begin at dusk. The Capri Drive-In is located in Coldwater, MI at 119 W. Chicago Rd (US-12), just west of town. The phone number at the theatre is 517-278-5628 and the web address is www.capridrive-in.com. Cole Story Ford is located at 410 East Chicago just east of downtown, their web address is www.colestory.com. Contact Info: Gary Ritzenthaler webmaster@capridrive-in.com 248-219-8387

MUSTANG

BULLITT - THE MOVIE

BULLITT.....What comes to mind whenever this movie is mentioned? Sure, the late great Steve McQueen is Frank Bullitt, the star of the movie. But that Mustang.....that bad green Mustang is what immediately comes to mind for most gearheads. That Mustang was actually a 1968 Highland Green S-code 390 big-block 4-speed GT fastback with those classic American Torq-Thrust mags. Two were built for the filming of "Bullitt", one survived, one did not. The Mustangs engines and suspensions were modified for combat with the hills of San Francisco. Typically, Hollywood movie cars were considered old used-up trash afer filming was completed, and were treated as such. The story is, the primary car was disposed of at a junkyard, having sustained much damage during filming. The backup car, also used in filming, is reportedly tucked away in a barn somewhere in Kentucky. The present owner keeps it hidden away and will not allow photos to be taken, or it's location reveiled, it is reportedly in very rough condition. Steve McQueen tried unsuccessfully to purchase the car in 1977, and sadly succumbed to cancer in 1980.

Bullitt and it's '68 Mustang has become quite the phenomenon, to the point where Ford Motor Company offered a special edition Bullitt package on it's popular Mustang GT in 2001. The Bullitt Mustang received a revised intake manifold boosting the 4.6L SOHC engine to 265-hp, Torq-Thrust-style 17" aluminum wheels, lowered suspension and bigger brakes. Inside, the Bullitt offered aluminium shifter trim and ball, pedals and sill trim, '68-style seats and instrumentation. Outside, the GT rear spoiler was deleted while the fake hood scoop remained. A Bullitt trunk emblem, unique rocker mouldings and an racy aluminum gas door complete the look. The Bullitt and was offered in dark green, blue and black, and received unique underhood id number plates as well. The $3,700 Bullitt option package was ordered on approximately 6,500 Mustang GT's.
