Update: I was looking for info on the Starlight DIT in Saugatuck, and I ran across the following in a book called "Off The Record: The
Unpublished Photographs of Bill Simmons: A Pictorial History of Saugatuck in the 40s and 50s." Page 84: "The Starlight Drive-In Theatre
opened on the Blue Star (note: Old Highway 31), complete with windshield cleaning service, and another short lived drive-in theater with
"room for 400 cars" was established at the north east corner of Center and Ferry streets in 1946 by two Chicago fellows by the name of
Cox and Smith."The ad (attached) appeared on May 31, 1946 and the DIT, simply named "Drive-In Theater" opened on June 7, 1946!!
That's more than two months before the Dort opened in Flint (8/29/1946), making this DIT the third to open in Michigan!!! The article is
correct, it was "short lived," it closed on 8/31/1946. No ads could be located for 1947 or 1948. The Starlight apparently opened 7/8/1949
(the ad does not say "Grand Opening" - ???). (Andrew Wilson 429/04)
