History & Comments

News Article: Drive-In To Open Soon - John Wagner of Detroit, who is having a new Drive in theatre built west of Junction US-27 and M-33, announced today that he expects to have the theatre ready for opening within the next several days. At the present time he operates the Ford Wyoming Drive In in Detroit. The Cheboygan Drive In will be operated by Boyd Crist of Black Lake, Mr. Wagner announced today. He purchased the 16 acres of property on which the Drive In is being built from Jack O'Grady of Cheboygan. The property has been leveled off and made ready for parking space for 350 cars. All the latest and newest RCA individual speakers are being installed so that each car will be supplied with one. An extra large water cooled projection lamp is being installed in the projection room. Best pictures obtainable will be shown at all times, Mr. Wagner stated. In conjunction with the theatre a concession stand will be operated by Mrs. Boyd Crist. They plan to sell hot dogs, soft drinks, candy and ice cream. As an added feature of entertainment for the youngsters, a playground will be built in front of the screen. There will be an attendant in charge at all times. At present time Mr. Wagner said they are being held up a bit for the playground equipment because of the steel strike. There will be swings, merry-go-round, slides and many other amusements. Modern rest rooms will also be built. As soon as their son graduates from high school in Detroit next spring, Mr. and Mrs. Wagner plan to make their retirement home in Cheboygan. In the winter time he plans to spend most of his time fishing through the ice and hunting. The drive-in will be open only during the warm months of the year. (Chegoygan Daily Tribune 7/7/52)

Update: The Cheboygan Drive-In was demolished around 1983 according to an employee of the gas station that is situated directly in front of the screen tower, none of the structures remain. (Michigandriveins.com 11/20/99)

Update: A recent site inspection revealed that the ticket booth still remains.(Waterwinterwonderland.com 9/30/03)
